Abstracts

Abstracts can be submitted to any of the following themes:
  1. Health Inequalities
  2. Technology suitable for rural settings
  3. Island medicine
  4. Health services for immigrants

Other rural health topics for presentations, workshops or posters will also be accepted.
The deadline for submission of abstracts is: Tuesday, January 20, 2009

PRESENTATION TYPES

1. RESEARCH PAPERS

a) Papers on Completed Research
If you are submitting an abstract in this category, the research project must be complete at the time of the Call for Papers submission deadline of January 20, 2009.
  • Paper presentations will be given in concurrent sessions and will be grouped by the Scientific Committee.
  • A maximum of 15 minutes – 10 for presentation and 5 for discussion and transition to the next paper – will be allotted for individual paper presentations.
  • A moderator will be in attendance for each presentation.
  • The Scientific Committee reserves the right to convert papers on completed research from podium presentations to poster presentations based on suitability and/or the need to limit each presenter’s podium presentations.
b) Research in Progress
This category provides researchers with a project in its early stages the opportunity to benefit from expertise of other researchers and receive constructive feedback. To qualify for this category, your research must still be in progress at the time of the Conference. The majority of research in progress will be presented as posters. The Scientific Committee may select for podium presentations those submissions that address methodological or conceptual questions that would be of interest to a larger audience or that can be grouped coherently together. Selection will also be based on the total number of submissions received) complete and in progress) and/or the need to limit each presenter’s podium presentations.

  • Podium presentations will be given in concurrent sessions and will be grouped by the Scientific Committee.
  • A maximum of 15 minutes (5 for presentation and 10 for discussion) will be allotted for individual paper presentations.
  • A moderator will be present to lead discussion
2. POSTER PRESENTATIONS
  • Poster presentations will be given stand-alone time to maximize contact between researchers.
  • Presenters are asked to personally attend their posters during designated periods.
  • Poster presentations can be completed research or research in progress. If your research is in progress at the time of the submission deadline but will be complete at the time of the Conference, it is recommended that you submit your abstract as a poster presentation.
3. WORKSHOPS
  • Workshops will be scheduled as 60 or 90–minute sessions and will run concurrently with other sessions.
  • Presenters with research methodology or research skills development ideas that involve audience participation are encouraged to submit a workshop abstract.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION / GENERAL INFORMATION

  1. The abstract submission starts on May 2nd, 2008.
  2. The abstract submission deadline expires on January 20th, 2009.
  3. Abstracts submitted for the 9th WONCA Rural Health World Conference can be submitted by e-mail or online.
  4. The Scientific Committee of the Conference will decide upon the presentation type of each abstract (podium presentation or poster), date and time of presentation.
  5. Presenting authors will be informed about the status of the abstract (accepted / rejected), its presentation type, date and time on March 6th, 2009.
  6. All accepted abstracts will be included in the Book of Abstracts of the 9th WONCA Rural Health World Conference, provided that the presenting author has been registered to the conference the latest by March 20th, 2009.
  7. Research previously published or presented at international meeting and/or conferences is not acceptable.
  8. All paper, workshop and posters presenters must be registered for the conference and pay registrations fees.
  9. To accommodate as many presenters as possible, the Scientific Committee reserves the right to limit each presenter to only one presentation. However, anyone may be listed as coauthor on multiple papers and may present another person’s paper if the original presenter is not able to attend the Conference.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Authors are kindly requested to adhere to the following submission guidelines:
Format
  • Language: English
  • Abstract text word limit: 300 words (names and affiliation details are not included)
  • Suggested font: Tahoma, size 10 cpi
  • Text alignment: Justified
  • Spacing between the title, the author(s) and the abstract text: Single
  • Line spacing of the text: Single
  • Abstract title typed in: UPPER CASE
  • The family name(s) of the author(s) should be written in lower case preceded by the first name(s) of the author(s) written in full.
  • The presenting author’s name must be written in bold.
  • All authors’ affiliation details [department, institution / hospital, city / town, state (if applicable) and country] should be written under the names, preceded by the correspondence indices. The affiliations should NOT be mentioned in the abstract text.
  • The abstract should be divided in the following section (the titles being typed in lower case and in bold): Introduction – Purpose – Material – Methods – Results – Conclusions.
  • The text may include standard abbreviations, tables, diagrams and photographs, as long as they remain within the page margins and the total amount of words does not exceed the abovementioned limit (300 words).

Abstracts submitted via fax or mail will NOT be accepted.

REVIEW PROCESS: All submissions will be peer reviewed and evaluated in terms of their appropriateness and their overall quality. While the review is intended to be constructive and educational, it will also assist in the selection of submissions for presentation. The Scientific Committee retains the right to decide a change in the type of presentation.
